Bertrand Goy & Bernard Dulon - Tsogho. Icons of Bwiti &a - Lot 63
Bertrand Goy & Bernard Dulon - Tsogho. Icons of Bwiti & Kota Ancestors - 2011 Tsogho. Icons of Bwiti The art of the people living in south-central Gabon, between the Ngounié River and the Chaillu Massif, has not received the recognition accorded to that of the Fang or the Kota. Difficult access to this mountainous, landlocked region, while preserving the customs and rites of the many ethnic groups living there, has delayed recognition of their material culture. Yet Tsogho and Apindji are at the origin of Bwiti and its cult objects. This important initiation rite, guarantor of social order, has found a considerable echo throughout the country and even beyond its borders. This book, devoted to the art of the Tsogho and its neighbors the Sango, Vuvi, Apindji and Eshira, brings together the finest specimens of their anthropomorphic statuary. The author places them in their historical context, with the ambition of giving this "center of style" the place it deserves in the history of African art. Bertrand Goy was born in Africa and lived there for many years. A member of the Société des Africanistes, he is a recognized specialist in the history of primitive arts. A regular contributor to specialized magazines such as Le monde de l'art tribal, he is the author of numerous reference works on the subject, including Jarai, which won the Auguste Pavie prize from the Académie des sciences d'outre-mer, and Côte d'Ivoire, premiers regards sur la sculpture, which won the international prize for tribal art books. Kota ancestors "The magic of exhibitions is that, by bringing together a few well-chosen objects, sometimes with rare masterpieces, they allow the curious visitor to travel to faraway lands that are not easily accessible, and to plunge into the immemorial times of traditions that are no longer with us. Ancestors Kota. Gabon, Congo takes us throughout eastern Gabon and adjacent Congo, regions of the great forest of equatorial Africa, and evokes the traditional life of 19th-century Kota and Mbete villages, subject as much to the constraints of ancestral beliefs as to their ecstatic visions"...
