Alphonse Fourtier was sent to Algeria in the early 1840s. It was during this campaign that he produced this notebook of drawings, dated between 1842 and 1843. A member of the Société d'archéologie, his high-quality graphic work is rediscovered here, confirming his interest in architecture and ruins. The album of drawings is complemented by photographs of a trip to Brazil and Argentina, although it is not possible to state with certainty whether the traveler was the son or the father. However, in addition to images by the German photographer Albert Frisch (1840-1918) and the Swiss photographer George Leuzinger (1813-1892), which were purchased on the spot, there are personal views taken by one of the two men. His son, Hyacinthe, followed in his father's footsteps and entered the Saint-Cyr military academy. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Beaumont in the Ardennes in 1870. The following year, he was posted to the 115th infantry regiment, where he became captain in 1880. Wounded in the hand by an explosion, he was attached to the army staff in charge of the photography department. Appointed Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1889, he gave a number of lectures on photography and published several works on the subject, notably on astrophotography, artificial lighting and photographic chemistry.
