Léonard BORDES (1898-1969) - Lot 66
Léonard BORDES (1898-1969) Harvest under a Stormy Sky. Oil on panel signed lower left. Montparnasse frame. 50.5 x 61.5 cm Encouraged to take up painting by family friend Jacques-Émile Blanche, Léonard Bordes (1898-1969) studied with Philippe Zacharie at the École des beaux-arts de Rouen, where he rubbed shoulders with Thieulin and Le Trividic. During his trips to Normandy in the 1930s, Othon Friesz and Vlaminck noticed him and visited his Rouen studio. Deeply affected by the destruction of Rouen during the Second World War, his canvases became darker, focusing more on the land and its people. This shift began in 1945, when he met Gaston Sébire. The two men travelled to many places in Normandy and Spain to paint. This oil painting of threatening weather over a field is typical of the artist's expressionist production.
