Pierre Roy engraved the woodcut in 1914 as the intended frontispiece for Apollinaire’s planned collection *Et moi aussi je suis peintre* (*And I, Too, Am a Painter*), which the war prevented from being published; the image finally appeared in the tribute volume *Présence d’Apollinaire* (1943), of which this sheet is the engraved page. The original engraved woodblock is housed at the Centre Pompidou (from the “Wall of André Breton’s Studio”).
